Rand follows stronger euro

The South African rand firmed a fraction in midday trade, tracking a firmer euro amid positive comments from European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet on the potential bailout of Greece.

At 11.36am the rand was bid at R7.41 to the dollar, R9.92 to the euro and R11.00 to the pound. The euro was bid at $1.3370 from $1.3303 previously.

A local trader said: "We are moving away from yesterday's rate decision, with attention turning towards international markets and positive news coming out of Greece."

Dow Jones Newswires reported that in the European foreign exchanges, the euro rose against the dollar after European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said joint financial aid for Greece from the EU and IMF would be a "workable solution", after saying earlier that IMF aid for Greece, instead of from euro-zone member countries, would be "very, very bad".

At 09:10 GMT, the euro was quoted at $1.3375, up from $1.3272 in late New York trade Thursday, while the dollar eased to Y92.55 from Y92.73.
