The rand saw sideways movement in afternoon trade on Friday, tracking the euro amid light volume.
At 3.35pm the rand was bid at R7.43 to the dollar, R11.05 to the pound and R9.94 to the euro. The euro was bid at $1.3363 from $1.3303 previously.
A local currency trader said: "We have seen sideways movement from the rand amid fairly light volumes, within a range of 7.42-50 against the dollar.
"The euro has been well bid today, but has come off a fraction from its earlier highs. We need to see the rand break out of its range for any further action."
Dow Jones Newswires reported that the euro and other risk sensitive currencies are higher Friday as the market digests an agreement between the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to provide emergency aid for Greece.
The euro's gains have been relatively muted, however, as markets players worry about the terms of the aid package and the sovereign debt issues that continue to overhang other euro-zone countries.
