Rand fails to break key level

The rand came off 7.20 against the greenback in midday play on Wednesday, amid profit taking. The local currency also bounced off 9.62 against the single currency.

At 11.46am the rand was bid at R7.24 to the dollar from R7.21 at its previous close. It was bid at R9.68 to the euro and R10.99 to the pound. The euro was bid at $1.3386 from $1.3399 previously.

A local currency trader said: "We bounced off 7.20 against the dollar after some profit taking and importer demand. The rand also tested 9.62 against the euro, but came off that too. We will now test 7.28 against the dollar," he said.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that worries about Greek financing costs remained the primary driver of currency markets Wednesday, leaving the euro lower against most other majors.

The pound, meanwhile, was under pressure as the UK election campaign got underway in earnest.
