Rand still on the back foot

The rand remained on the back foot in afternoon play on Thursday, tracking a softer euro as Greece's financial woes deepened.

At 3.37pm the rand was bid at R7.48 to the dollar, R9.98 to the euro and R11.47 to the pound.

The euro was bid at $1.3304 from $1.3388 previously.

A local trader said: "The rand is wobbly. It's all about the euro on the back of continued bad news out of Greece. We need to break R7.50/$ to get interesting though," he said.

An additional rand negative included comments by SARB governor Gill Marcus about the interest rates, the trader said. "Marcus said that rates were likely to remain stable for some time.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that the euro dropped Thursday after the European Union said Greece's budget deficit last year was higher than Greece had reported, and could still be revised higher, spotlighting the stressed finances of the euro zone periphery.
