JSE gains on strong US markets

The JSE opened stronger across the board on Thursday as investors welcomed huge gains on Wall Street, which saw the Dow break through the key 10 000-point mark.

At 09.17am local time the JSE all share index had risen 0.76% as resources gained 1.05% and platinum miners added 1.04%. Gold producers were 1.38% higher. Banks spurred 1.12%, financials increased 0.89% and industrials firmed 0.43%. Gold was quoted at $1 204.32 a troy ounce from at $1 194.07/oz at the JSE's previous close, while platinum was at $1 529.50/oz from $1 515.50/oz at the JSE's last close.

A local trader said the domestic bourse took its cue from global markets, with the US markets rallying strongly and Asian stocks following suit.  The trader said Nedbank and Old Mutual rose on the back of rumours that HSBC is interested in acquiring Nedbank.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that Asian stock markets were higher on Thursday, boosted by strength on Wall Street on Wednesday.

European stocks also opened higher on Thursday following an upbeat US session in the US. London stocks were last up over 1%.
