Rand follows euro upwards

The rand tracked a firming euro against an under pressure greenback in the afternoon session on Thursday, after US jobless claims unexpectedly rose to their highest level in nine months.

At 3.32pm local time the rand was bid at R7.23 to the dollar, R9.31 to the euro and R11.31 to the pound. The euro was bid at $1.2868 from $1.2852 overnight.

A local dealer said: "The jobless figure wasn't a great one for the US which caused the euro to pick up against the dollar. We really need to see the euro above 1.29 however, to spark anything significant."

Dow Jones Newswires reported the dollar fell on Thursday after US jobless claims unexpectedly rose to their highest level in nine months, further stoking fears about the country's already weak labour market. US initial unemployment claims rose by 12 000 to 500 000 in the week ended Aug. 14, the Labour Department said in its weekly report on Thursday.
