A drunk Australian tourist who washed up on the driveway of a Johannesburg politician on Wednesday has been labelled a “legend” by friends at home and new-found fans on the Internet.
Jerry Goding, 26, who was found passed-out on Kate Lorimer’s driveway, said he had received many Facebook messages after media reports yesterday.
“My friends wrote comments like: ‘Oh gosh, some things just never change’ and other people I don’t even know were telling me what a hero I am,” he said. One friend, Mucker, wrote: “Jerry, you are a legend. Hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your trip without your wallet.”
Someone called Boothowl wrote: “That’s awesome! Typical of Jerry too. Jerry, mate, keep the stories coming and try and take care of yourself over there.”
His Facebook wall is flooded with posts, which read: “I’m stoked that I made the front page of The Times newspaper in Saffa. I have a funny feeling that this month is [going to] get better.”
Lauren Brown’s post said: “I thought passing out in South Africa meant certain death. Obviously not for Ole Jerry”.
Another mate, Jonathan Harding, wrote: “I get mugged by 12 guys in Tanzania and you pass out in Johannesburg and get woken up with breakfast and a shower — it’s unbelievable.”
Goding said he was “humbled” by the attention and was looking forward to the next match, between Australia and the US.
