JSE climbs in afternoon trade

The JSE was firmer in midday trade on Tuesday in line with world markets, boosted by positive global earnings and a rise in precious metal prices.

By noon the JSE all share index was up 0.83%, with resources 1.04% stronger, gold miners 0.29% better and platinum miners 2.44% higher. Banks added 0.79%, financials garnered 0.67%, while the industrial index collected 0.76%. Gold was quoted at $1,141.49 a troy ounce from $1,133.88/oz at the JSE's last close. Platinum was at $1,709/oz from $1,689/oz at the JSE's last close.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that European stocks rose Tuesday, boosted by positive global earnings news ahead of expected strong results from Goldman Sachs.

Asian equity markets ended mostly higher Tuesday, as regional financial and airline stocks gained after Monday's sharp losses on an overnight rise on Wall Street.

Meanwhile, US stocks are set to open higher Tuesday, with the SEC's move against Goldman Sachs now having little immediate effect on markets, says David Morrison, strategist at GFT. He calls the DJIA up 8 points at 11,100 and the S&P 500 up 2.5 at 1200.

On the JSE, Anglo American was R2.56 higher at R327.20, while BHP Billiton added R2.67 or 1.08% to R246.73. Sasol was up R2.02 to R297.02.
