Bullock, Bridges scoop top prizes

AFPSandra Bullock won her first Oscar Sunday scooping the best actress award for her performance as a feisty southern housewife who mentors a homeless black teenager in the sports drama "The Blind Side."

Bullock had been the front-runner for the statuette after winning a virtual sweep of the pre-Oscars awards including the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Oscar victory comes after the most successful year of Bullock's career where she appeared in two hit films, "The Blind Side" and "The Proposal" which have grossed more than 700 million dollars combined.

Jeff Bridges won the Oscar for best actor at the Academy Awards for his portrayal of an alcoholic country singer in the drama "Crazy Heart.

Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman in history to win the Oscar for best director, claiming the coveted prize for her Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker."

The 58-year-old film-maker -- only the fourth woman ever to be nominated for the award -- defeated ex-husband James Cameron to win the golden statuette at the Kodak Theatre.

The Hurt Locker also won the Best Picture award this year.
