District 9 tops $100 million

South African horror film, District 9, has now grossed more than $100 million at the US box office after yet another good weekend in more than 3 000 cinemas there.

District 9, a movie about space aliens, was produced on a budget of $30 million and filmed in Soweto.

The filming was completed in two months under the direction of Neill Blomkamp, 29, a Canadian who grew up in Johannesburg. The local tie means it’s no surprise that the aliens are named after Johannesburg's "Parktown prawns" - harmless, but huge and disgusting crablike creatures, that are the bane of many a Johannesburg housewife.

While locals are bursting with pride, there has been mixed reaction in South Africa to the movie, with punters either loving or hating the sci-fi horror.

But it’s the money that counts and District 9 earned $7 million in the US this past weekend alone, coming in at five on the box office chart. It's total earnings in the US alone now stands at $101 274 000.

Topping the charts for the second week running was The Final Destination, followed by new release All about Steve, Inglorious Basterds and another new release Gamer.
