Nine men rob woman in Pretoria

Five men, allegedly part of a gang of nine that robbed a woman of an undisclosed amount of money in Pretoria, were arrested in Johannesburg.

"The men and four others followed a 55-year-old woman from an ATM to her work after she had withdrawn a large sum of money," police spokesperson Lynette Erasmus said.

The gang, driving in a panel van and a bakkie, attacked the woman as she got out of her car to open the gate of her workplace in Constantia Park, Pretoria East. They asked her to hand over her handbag, which contained the money she had withdrawn from an ATM in Menlyn Park.

When she refused one of the men hit her with the butt of a gun and took the money. Four of them jumped into the bakkie and others into the panel van and fled the scene.

A bystander who had witnessed the robbery followed the van and called the police. The van was stopped on the R21 in Johannesburg where they were arrested, but the money was not recovered.

The woman was sent to hospital. The men would be charged with armed robbery. Police were still searching for the other four robbers.
