Cosatu to march in Johannesburg today

Members of the Congress of SA Trade Unions in Gauteng will march through Johannesburg on Thursday as part of the ongoing campaign for a better pay rise for public servants.

It was expected that 20 000 marchers would gather at Mary Fitzgerald Square from 9am and proceed to the high court in Pritchard Street, then to the Gauteng department of finance in Main street.

From there they would go to the local government and housing department in Sauer Street and then to the Johannesburg Central police station.

During the march they would discuss the government's latest pay offer with members, who have until Friday to make up their minds.

They would also complain to the police about strikers being shot with rubber bullets and drenched with water cannons during protests.

The government upped its offer on Monday to 7.5 percent and an R800 housing allowance, but unions are demanding 8.6 percent and R1000.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Wednesday that members were rejecting the offer, but they have until Friday to put in a final response to the government.

The strike is into its third week with many employees staying away with no pay.
