Sao Paulo burns

A massive fire has broken out in a slum in Sao Paulo, sending residents running across rooftops to escape the flames.

There have been no reports of deaths so far in the Diogo Pires shantytown in Brazil's largest city.

Television broadcasts show flames leaping 20 meters into the air as some residents flee and others help fire-fighters battle the blaze with hoses and buckets of water.

Fire officials say there is no word yet on what caused Sunday's blaze, which began around 6 p.m. (2100 GMT) in western Sao Paulo.

Fire-fighters have managed to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the rickety shacks of the slum to neighbouring industrial buildings.
