Paraguay goes through on penalties

AFPParaguay moved into the quarterfinals of the World Cup after defeating Japan 5-3 on a penalty shootout after neither side managed to score after extra time in their disappointing Round of 16 showdown played at the Loftus Stadium on Tuesday.

It was the first time a 2010 clash was decided on a penalty shootout.

Japan's Yuichi Komano hit his penalty against the crossbar while  Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo calmly stroked home the fifth and decisive spot kick to send the South American side into the last eight for the first time.

Paraguay will play the winner of the Spain/Portugal second round clash being played in Cape Town on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals at Ellis Park on Saturday night.

And on this showing Paraguay will struggle against either of the Iberian powerhouses. They will have to play a whole lot better if they hope to stay in the tournament. If they repeat this rubbish they may as well book a midnight flight home from OR Tambo Airport on Saturday.

The two sides could have played until the next World Cup in 2014 and still not managed to score.
