Puma mistakes hand Lions another win

Gallo ImagesThe Pumas gifted the Golden Lions a 33-30 win after they turned down a gilt-edged chance to draw their Currie Cup match at the Puma Stadium, Witbank, on Friday night.

Pumas captain Hannes Franklin said after the match that his side failed to use their scoring chances that surfaced during the match. The Pumas had a chance to draw the match but instead chose to run a penalty, smack in front of the Lions' posts, moments after the hooter had sounded.

"In the first half and at the end we had a few scoring opportunities that we missed whereas they took the opportunities and went for goal," said Franklin. "It's hard to lose like this, especially as it was a home game. But we will go back - it will be no different like we did in recent weeks, we'll continue to work hard on our game.”

Franco van der Merwe, the Lions' skipper said he was highly relieved when the referee finally ended the match, after he allowed six minutes of play after the hooter had sounded.

"After this second successive win it's a good feeling," said Van der Merwe, who was sin binned in the second half. "The guys showed a lot of character in the last few minutes. We defended well and I'm quite happy with that.”
