Federer recovers to make semis

big_imageThe world’s number one seed and favourite to win the title in Melbourne, Roger Federer, has beaten Nikolay Davydenko of Russia to march on to the semifinals of the Australian Open.

Federer trailed by a set and a break after some amazing tennis in the first 13 games of the match, but the top seed came back to take the second set and then did not drop a game in the third.

Federer says he just tried to stay positive and waited for Davydenko’s form to go down in the first set. “I hung in there and believed that I would get lucky and I did in the end.”

The fourth set was again a close-matched affair, but the Swiss player took the final game without dropping a point to set up a match with the winner of the next match on centre court today, Novak Djokovic of Servia or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France.

“I think it’s going to be a good match, regardless of who I play,” Federer said after today’s match.

Earlier today one of the favourites in the women’s draw, Venus Williams, was knocked out of the tournament. She lost 2-6, 7-5 and 7-5 to Na Li of China. Na will now face sister Serena Williams in the semi-final.

The other place in the final will be decided in a match between Justine Henin and Jie Zheng.
