Smith goes before lunch

big_imageA wet outfield delayed the start of play on the fourth day of the second Test against India in Kolkata. When things finally got underway, Graeme Smith fell to the first delivery from Amit Mishra in the innings.

At the crease are Alviro Petersen, who has 18 runs, and Hashim Amla on seven. South Africa has 49 for one, still trailing India's first innings score by 298 runs.

South Africa won the toss on Sunday and elected to bat, but hundreds from Amla and Petersen was not enough to set a competitive total after the rest of the visiting batsmen capitulated.

India yesterday declared on 643 for six, with four batsmen scoring in the three figures. Four South African bowlers dropped more than a hundred runs in the innings.

Cloudy and wet conditions may give the South Africans a chance to draw the Test and claim the number one spot in world Test cricket.
