No goal for Bafana in Freetown

The South African national soccer side managed only a goalless draw against Sierra Leone in Freetown yesterday, but Bafana Bafana gained a crucial single point from the match.

The South Africans do not have a good record away from home, but the team will take some heart in a decent performance (especially early in the match) in the difficult Freetown conditions. They were on top in the first 12 minutes of the match and Bernard Parker got close to scoring.

But Sierra Leone kept the South African defenders very busy in the rest of the match, with Itumeleng Khune kept on his toes in goal.

The national team has lost one of their past 16 games, against Uruguay in the World Cup in June, but the draw in Freetown does mean that a win will be important in the next 2012 Nations Cup qualifier. Egypt lost to Niger 1-0 to Niger this weekend, which means that South Africa heads their group for the 2012 tournament.

South Africa takes on Egypt in March next year.
